Through education, access to funding, and post-launch technical assistance, Retail Alliance is setting retailers up for long-term success and helping to strengthen our local economy.
This program will offer comprehensive wraparound services, including business education, community crowdfunding, access to capital, and ongoing technical assistance.
Program Benefits
Comprehensive Business Support: Participants receive wraparound services including education, access to capital, community crowdfunding, and ongoing technical assistance.
Tailored Education Track: Startups complete the Certificate in Retail Operations, while more advanced retailers receive expert guidance to refine growth strategies.
Community Engagement Campaign: A 30-day NuMarket campaign helps businesses validate their concept and build local support before launch.
Access to Capital: Eligible businesses can apply for loans created specifically for this pilot program.
Post-Launch Mentoring: Opportunity to receive ongoing consulting and mentoring from Retail Alliance and the SBDC

eligibility requirements
Small retail businesses that sell products, services, or experiences directly to consumers
Owners who can provide proof of formation in Virginia
Located in, or plan to locate in one of four pilot communities (High Street- Portsmouth, Hilton Village Main Street- Newport News, Settlers Landing/Bridge St- Hampton, Granby Street, Norfolk)
Eligible applicants include startups, home-based businesses transitioning to storefronts, and existing businesses ready to expand.
evaluation & selection
This pilot is limited to 20 businesses. Submitting an application does not guarantee acceptance into the program. All applicants will be reviewed by the program facilitator. Those not initially deemed creditworthy may be offered credit counseling to prepare for future opportunities. Priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate strong credit, a viable retail concept that meets community needs, and a clear commitment to the program. Only serious and motivated retailers should apply.
